Video: Los Angeles Marathon Roadrunner Training at Dodger Stadium January 8, 2011

Here are a couple of videos which I shot last Saturday at Dodger Stadium and at Walt Louie's (LA Roadrunner Run/Walk 5 Paceleader) office.

The production value leaves alot to be desired but I am learning with my new Bloggie from Sony.

Saturday's training session was "Hill Training" with two laps around the 5K Hill course in Elysian Park surrounding Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

To Predict Seniors’ Life Spans, Check Their Walking Speeds?

When doctors want a clue to which seniors might have many years still ahead of them—and who might be in trouble—it seems one of the best pieces of evidence could be simply how fast the person walks.

That’s the conclusion of a study by University of Pittsburgh scientists published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The work reviewed the results of nine other studies over the years that included more than 34,000 people aged 65 or older. When they tallied the total results, the numbers jumped off the page:

Only 19 percent of the slowest walking 75-year-old men lived for 10 more years compared to 87 percent of the fastest walking ones. Only 35 percent of the slowest walking 75-year-old women made it to their 85th birthday compared to 91 percent of the fastest walkers. [Boston Globe]
Well, DUH.

And, although I am not 65 yet and there has been no scientific evidence that running or walking faster will add years to your life (the converse), I will take my chances with my physical activity and running training.

BodyMedia FIT Teaming Up With Sprint to Provide Real-Time Activity Monitoring

Weight loss blogger Skinny Emmie (www.skinnyemmie.com) gives a video review of her BodyMedia FIT activity monitoring device.

I like the idea and this will be the ultimate in real-time monitoring for the person who wants to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Sprint is partnering with BodyMedia out of Pittsburgh, PA to provide real-time connectivity between BodyMedia's personal monitoring wristbands and Sprint's smartphones. Similar to the popular FitBit, BodyMedia's wristband tracks activity levels which are then stored and analyzed on your phone.

Through the Sprint ID BodyMedia Pack, users will be able to make use of custom Android applications to see their calorie input vs. output, understand their calorie balance and create personalized workouts based upon caloric activity or step targets. The BodyMedia ID pack will be available during first half of 2011 while the new wireless embedded products will be launched this year.

It is all about accountability and that you will have with these devices.
