Virigina Dentist Tuan Vu Sentenced to Three Years in Prison for Insurance Fraud

The sentence came down yesterday from an earlier guilty plea.

An Arlington,Va., man must pay more than $2 million in restitution after a conviction Tuesday for defrauding more than 50 private dental insurance providers.

Tuan Vu, 43, the owner of Cosmetic &Family Dentistry PLLC in Arlington, received a 3-year, 10-month prison sentence, followed by two years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to health care fraud on January 10 of this year. U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady also ordered Vu to pay a $250,000 fine, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Officials said Vu admitted he committed fraud from at least January 2007 through September 2011.

Dentist Vu billed at least 10 private insurance companies and Virginia Medicaid for services he did not complete.

Now, he will be locked up in prison and have to pay all of the money back anyway. Of course, he will never practice dentistry again.

Vu could have received ten years in prison.

What a waste of a career.
